Mount Elgon is a massive extinct volcano bordering eastern Uganda and western Kenya and the 4th highest mountain in East Africa. It covers 1,121 Square Kilometers in size and it rises more than 3000 meters above the surrounding plains. The park has magnificent waterfalls, caves,gorges and hot springs and is excellent for hiking.

Sipi Falls is a lovely waterfall found at the foothills of Elgon Mountain and it’s a starting point to every hike on this very mountain. The gorgeous waterfalls comprises of a series of 3 falls with heights of 100m, 85m, 75m respectively. It’s found in Kapchorwa District.

What to Expect
Mountain Elgon is an extinct volcano and the fourth highest mountain in East Africa, reaching 4,321 meters high. The Park has magnificent waterfalls, Caves, gorges and hot springs excellent for hiking. No technical climbing equipment or skill are required all major peaks are accessible to hikers.

The full trekking circuit on the Mountain takes 4-5 days to complete and there are three trails,3-7 Kilometers long. The magnificent Sipi Falls are 66km.

The Park area has Caves, Peaks, Gorges, Hot springs and Forest Trails.

    Itinerary

    Day 1 Tororo Rock Hike

    Start your trip after breakfast at 7.00am with your driver/ guide from your hotel premises. Using the Jinja road high way pass the Mabira forest, the Owen falls dam in Jinja town then you will go for a short hike on the Tororo rock. The rock is a steep volcano which rises to about 1,800metres above sea level and it can be seen for miles before reaching it.
    You will take a hike on Tororo rock for it doesn’t require any skills anyone can do it.

    The rock has a well maintained trail, well trained guides that give hikers geological information as they visit the several ancestral caves with various rock paintings and it only takes approximately about an hour to climb to the top of this rock.

    At the top of the rock you will enjoy a fascinating scenery and a lovely view of Tororo town, Mountain Elgon and Lake Victoria. You will have you lunch in Tororo town and you will proceed for the evening in Mbale Town for the night in Mbale Resort hotel or Mount Elgon hotel.

    Day 2Wanale Mount Hike

    After breakfast, you will embark on a full day adventure with your parked lunch,this impressive mountain is located outside Mbale town

    with an elevation of 2092 meters. This hike isa cardiovascular workout, meaning you should be ready and fit for the climb. Nevertheless you will be much inspired by the locals and young children doing the same walk but carrying items on top of their heads. You will admire God’s beauty and styleof nature out in the wild, the mountain is endowed with escarpments, deep valleys, water streaked cliffs, caves and beautiful rocks. However the return leg in not as challenging as the climbing one. You will the retire for the night and dinner in Mbale resort hotel.

    Day 3Hiking Mountain Elgon.

    After an early morning breakfast you will take a short ride to Mount Elgon Exploration Centre to start the Elgon hike. It’s a full day adventure and you will have a picnic lunch in the wild. The Caldera and peaks are the main destination while along the way.

    Enjoy yoursplendor and peaceful trek, as you encounterthe beautiful fields of unique wildflowers, Bamboo trees, butterflies and birds such as thebronze-naped pigeon,Hartlaub’s turaco and Tacazze sunbird etc., along others like the water falls,lakes,caves, gorges and hot springs. Return for dinner and the night in the evening at Mbale Resort hotel.

    Day 4Sipi Falls tour

    After breakfast you will drive to Kapchorwa district for the Sipi falls tour. Your starting point will be the most popular spot that isBudadiri which follows the Sasa trail to the summit and then descends down the Sipi trail back into the Sipi Falls. Hiking around the falls will offer a splendid and magnificent view of the Vast Karomoja rugged plains, Lake Kyoga, Slopes of Mt.Elgon and an over view of Western Kenya. Lunch will be enroute.After exploring the falls you will return to Mbale and rest for the night and dinner.

    Day 5Travel to Kampala.

    Check out of your hotel rooms after breakfast and embark on your return journey to Kampala. You will have a stopover in Jinja for lunch at any hotel of your choice for they have a variety of excellent cuisines. After lunch you get an opportunity to see the Source of the Nile. Then you will proceed to Kampala at your hotel premises or you go direct to catch your flight back at home.
